Julia and Felix Kschessinsky in the mazurka (Polish dance) in the original Ivanov / Petipa
BAL780531 Julia and Felix Kschessinsky in the mazurka (Polish dance) in the original Ivanov/Petipa Swan Lake, 1895 (b/w photo) by Russian Photographer, (19th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Swan Lake ballet, Op. 20, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, was composed in 1875a'1876. The scenario, initially in four acts, was fashioned from Russian folk tales and tells the story of Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerers curse. The choreographer of the original production was Julius Reisinger. The ballet was premiered by the Bolshoi Ballet on 4 March 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Although it is presented in many different versions, most ballet companies base their stagings both choreographically and musically on the 1895 revival of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, first staged for the Imperial Ballet on 15 January 1895, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. ); Russian, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the elegance and grace of Julia and Felix Kschessinsky as they perform the mazurka, a traditional Polish dance, in the original Ivanov/Petipa production of Swan Lake. The photograph, taken by an anonymous Russian photographer in the 19th century, showcases the couple's impeccable technique and synchronicity. Swan Lake, composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875-1876, is a timeless ballet that tells the enchanting tale of Odette, a princess cursed to live as a swan. The original production was choreographed by Julius Reisinger and premiered at Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre on March 4th, 1877. However, it was Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov's revival of Swan Lake in 1895 that became the benchmark for future stagings. Their version debuted at St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre on January 15th, 1895. In this particular scene captured by the photographer from Fine Art Finder's private collection, Julia and Felix Kschessinsky embody both passion and precision as they execute intricate footwork while maintaining their poise. Their costumes exude opulence with ornate detailing that adds to the visual splendor of their performance. This remarkable image serves as a testament to not only the enduring beauty of Swan Lake but also to the skillful artistry displayed by dancers like Julia and Felix Kschessinsky who bring these iconic characters to life on stage.
