Bath Craft English Landscape Hammer Hammering Producing Trug Derwent Valley Labourer Winding River

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Matlock Baths, Derbyshire, c. 1789" takes us on a journey back in time to the picturesque English landscape of the late 18th century. The artist, William Day (1764-1807), skillfully captures the essence of this idyllic scene using watercolor, pen and brown ink, graphite, and wash on laid paper. The image showcases a winding river flowing through the beautiful Derwent Valley as it meanders its way through Matlock Baths. Nestled within this tranquil setting is a hardworking laborer diligently crafting trugs - traditional wooden baskets used for various purposes. With hammer and axe in hand, he hammers away at these intricate pieces with precision and expertise. The artist's attention to detail allows us to witness not only the craftsmanship involved but also offers a glimpse into everyday life during this period. As we observe this worker immersed in his task against the backdrop of nature's splendor, we are reminded of the symbiotic relationship between man and his environment. Matlock Baths was renowned for its natural thermal springs that attracted visitors seeking relaxation and healing properties. This image serves as a testament to both the beauty of nature found in Derbyshire's landscapes and the industrious spirit that shaped communities like Matlock Baths. Preserved within Yale Center for British Art's Paul Mellon Collection in America today, this artwork continues to captivate viewers with its timeless depiction of an era long gone by.
