Portrait of King Charles II of England, 1653 (oil on canvas)

499512 Portrait of King Charles II of England, 1653 (oil on canvas)
by Champaigne, Philippe de (1602-74); 182x141 (framed) 129.50x97.20 (unframed) cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Charles II (1630-1685) fled England in 1651 during the English civil war and commissioned this portrait during his exile in France. Charles II never fought on the battlefield, but he was the last British monarch to wear a full suit of armor, which represented his rank and status. The king gestures to the sea beyond the Dover cliffs, and the waiting fleet reveals his intention to return to England, which he did in 1660.

Curtain Sea Battle Suit Of Armour Rulers

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print showcases King Charles II of England, painted in 1653 by Philippe de Champaigne. The oil on canvas artwork measures 182x141 cm when framed and is currently housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. During his exile in France, Charles II commissioned this portrait as a symbol of his determination to reclaim the throne he had been forced to flee during the English civil war. Although he never fought on the battlefield himself, Charles II was known for being the last British monarch to don a full suit of armor, which served as a representation of his rank and status. In this painting, we see King Charles II gesturing towards the sea beyond Dover cliffs while an awaiting fleet hints at his intention to return triumphantly to England. And indeed, in 1660 he did just that. The image captures not only the regal presence and power exuded by King Charles II but also reflects upon significant historical events and symbols associated with him. From his royal stature and three-quarter length pose to references such as ships and swords representing battles at sea or land - all contribute to creating a rich narrative within this seventeenth-century masterpiece. This print from Fine Art Finder allows us to appreciate both the artistic skill employed by Philippe de Champaigne and delve into an important chapter of British history through visual storytelling.
