23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Fiat Justitia! The British Lion and the Afghan Wolves" captures a powerful political cartoon from Punch Magazine, dating back to 20th September 1879. Created by the renowned artist John Tenniel, this lithograph depicts an important moment in history during the Second Anglo-Afghan War. The image portrays the British Lion standing tall and proud, symbolizing Great Britain's imperial might. Surrounding it are a pack of Afghan wolves, representing Afghanistan's resistance against colonial domination. This cartoon specifically alludes to a significant phase of the war when Sir Frederick Roberts led the British forces to victory over the Afghan Army at Char Asiab on 6 October 1879. Through this artwork, Tenniel masterfully conveys themes of imperialism, conquest, and aggression prevalent during that era. It serves as a visual commentary on Britain's pursuit of dominance and control over foreign territories under its colonial rule. This historical photograph offers us a glimpse into an intense period marked by conflict between two nations with opposing agendas. It reminds us of how art can be used as a medium for social and political critique while shedding light on complex historical events. As we observe this striking image today, let us reflect upon its significance in understanding past struggles for power and sovereignty while appreciating Tenniel's artistic prowess in capturing such intricate narratives through his work.
