by Allom, Thomas (1804-72); 18.9x12.6 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: Thomas Allom was a London w/c painter. He was one of only a few 18th century artists to travel as far as China, where he painted this scene. The picture is in brown wash as it was intended to be reproduced as a print. It was published in 1843 as one of several prints titled China in a Series of Views, Displaying the Scenery, Architecture and Social Habits of that Ancient Empire. The detail in the picture is all the more striking because of its tiny size;

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Canton Bargemen Fighting Quails, 1843" takes us back in time to ancient China, capturing a moment of intense conflict and confrontation. Created by Thomas Allom, an adventurous London watercolor painter who ventured all the way to China in the 18th century, this artwork showcases his remarkable attention to detail despite its small size. In this scene, we witness two male bargemen engaged in a fierce battle between their prized quails. The brown wash technique used by Allom adds depth and intensity to the image, emphasizing the tension and excitement surrounding these fighting birds. As spectators gather around onlookers' houses along the quay, one can sense the anticipation and energy that fills the air. This picture was originally intended as part of a series called "China in a Series of Views" where Allom aimed to depict not only the scenery but also architecture and social habits of this ancient empire. Published as prints in 1843, these artworks allowed people far from China's shores to catch glimpses into its rich culture. Now housed at Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, this print serves as a testament to Thomas Allom's artistic talent and his ability to transport viewers across continents through his intricate drawings. It offers us a window into history while reminding us of our fascination with conflict and competition throughout time.
