Jaak Uudmae - 1980 Moscow Olympics - Triple Jump

Athletics - 1980 Moscow Olympics - Mens Triple Jump Final
The USSRs gold medal winner Jaak Uudmae at the Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium, Moscow, USSR.
This triple jump final was highly controversial, with apparent blatant cheating by the Russian officials resulting in a 1-2 for home athletes Uudmae and Viktor Saneyev. The two favourites, Australias Ian Campbell and Brazilian world record holder Joao Carlos de Oliveira, had nine of their twelve jumps in the final called as fouls. One of Campbells efforts would have broken the Olympic world record and won the competition, but was adjudged a foul because he he dragged his foot on the step phase - this is almost impossible to do at that speed, and was not evident in the television replays. de Oliveira had to settle for the bronze, while Campbell finished fifth

Cheating Judging Controversy

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense moment of Jaak Uudmae's triumphant victory at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Standing tall on the podium, draped in gold, Uudmae symbolizes the pinnacle of athletic achievement. The Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium serves as a backdrop, showcasing the grandeur and magnitude of this historic event. However, behind this seemingly perfect picture lies a tale of controversy and injustice. The triple jump final was marred by allegations of blatant cheating orchestrated by Russian officials. This resulted in an unfair advantage for Uudmae and his compatriot Viktor Saneyev, who claimed first and second place respectively. The favorites entering this competition were Australia's Ian Campbell and Brazilian world record holder Joao Carlos de Oliveira. Unfortunately for them, nine out of their twelve jumps were deemed fouls under questionable circumstances. One particular jump by Campbell would have shattered Olympic records and secured him victory had it not been unjustly disqualified due to a minor technicality captured only by judges' eyes. De Oliveira settled for bronze while Campbell finished fifth in what should have been their shining moments on that fateful day. This photograph immortalizes both triumph and controversy; it serves as a reminder that even within esteemed sporting events like the Olympics, fairness can sometimes be overshadowed by deceitful actions or biased judgments.
