The Heritage Listed 2nd Darwin Control Tower And Water Tank At Australian Aviation Heritage Centre, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia

This civil Control Tower was constructed under a water reservoir at Darwins military aerodrome in mid 1950s. The water tank dates from about 1940. A series of water towers was erected around Darwin as part of the scheme to convey Mantons water to the town and this was one such. It survived the Japanese bombing of Darwin from 1942 onward as well as Cyclone Tracy in 1974. It was painted in red and white squares to highlight it as an obstacle. However, in later years it became something of an obstruction, being sited in the middle of the RaF apron, the structure was dismantled in May 2008. Because of its iconic nature and significance as part of Darwins development (both as water tank and Control Tower), the structure became heritage listed and transported to be re-erected, somewhat foreshortened, at the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre on the southern boundary of Darwin Airport. n n

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the rich history and resilience of the 2nd Darwin Control Tower and Water Tank at the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Built in the mid-1950s under a water reservoir at Darwins military aerodrome, this heritage-listed civil control tower stands as a testament to both its functional purpose and symbolic significance. Dating back to around 1940, the water tank served as part of an extensive network designed to supply Mantons water to the town. Remarkably, it withstood not only the Japanese bombing of Darwin from 1942 onwards but also Cyclone Tracy's devastating impact in 1974. Originally painted in red and white squares for visibility as an obstacle, over time it became an obstruction on RaF apron. In May 2008, due to its iconic nature and historical importance for Darwin's development, this unique structure was dismantled and transported to be re-erected at the Australian Aviation Heritage Centre near Darwin Airport. Although slightly foreshortened during relocation, it continues to stand tall as a reminder of our past. Through Artie Photography's lens, we are invited into a world where architectural marvels intertwine with tales of survival against all odds. This print encapsulates not just a physical structure but also represents Darwins indomitable spirit that has weathered countless challenges throughout history.
