Germaine de Stael (1766-1817), 1843. French writer, novelist and political propagandist born in Paris, was the only child of Jacques Necker, French statesman and financier. Married unhappily in 1786 to the Swedish ambassador to France, she had many affairs, including a liaison with the author and political philosopher Benjamin Constant. Born in Paris in 1766, she was the daughter of Jacques Necker, a renowned French statesman and financier. Despite her unhappy marriage to the Swedish ambassador to France in 1786, Germaine led a life filled with intellectual pursuits and passionate affairs. One notable liaison was with Benjamin Constant, an influential author and political philosopher of that time. The photograph transports us back to 1843 when it was taken by Fanny Burney for her book "Diary and Letters of Madame D Arblay".
