Nordenfelt anti-aircraft gun in V Shop, Swindon Works c. 1915

This striking image shows a newly made 6 pdr Nordenfelt anti-aircraft gun complete with mounting platform and protective skirting. The manufacturing for all parts of the gun and surrounds was carried out in the Boiler (V) Shop. Some of the old equipment in V Shop was adapted for the deep boring of the gun barrels and breeches, but new machines were also purchased by Swindon Works for the specialised work. Due to the large amount of munitions work required for the war effort, a special arrangement was made for Swindon to purchase equipment and charge it to the Government account

Poster Prints are of comparable archival quality to our Photographic prints, they are simply printed on thinner Poster Paper. Whilst we only use Photographic Prints in our frames, you can frame Poster Prints if they are carefully supported to prevent sagging over time.

Poster prints are budget friendly enlarged prints in standard poster paper sizes (A0, A1, A2, A3 etc). Whilst poster paper is sometimes thinner and less durable than our other paper types, they are still ok for framing and should last many years. Our Archival Quality Photo Prints and Fine Art Paper Prints are printed on higher quality paper and the choice of which largely depends on your budget.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the year 1915, amidst the chaos of World War I. The image showcases a newly manufactured 6 pdr Nordenfelt anti-aircraft gun, proudly displayed in the V Shop at Swindon Works. Every component of this formidable weapon, including its mounting platform and protective skirting, was meticulously crafted within these walls. The V Shop served as the epicenter for all manufacturing related to the Nordenfelt anti-aircraft gun and its surroundings. To meet the demands of war production, both old equipment adapted for deep boring and new machines were acquired by Swindon Works. This enabled them to produce these essential weapons efficiently and effectively. Given the urgent need for munitions during this tumultuous period, an extraordinary arrangement was made between Swindon Works and the government. The works had permission to purchase necessary equipment on behalf of national defense efforts while charging it directly to the Government account. This photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and resilience during times of conflict. It stands as a reminder of how industries like Swindon Works played an instrumental role in supporting their nations' war efforts through innovation and resourcefulness.
