Sviatoslav Fyodorov
Sviatoslav Fyodorov (1927-2000), Soviet eye surgeon and politician, photographed in the conveyer-belt operating theatre he developed. Professor Fyodorov pioneered a reliable technique, known as radial keratotomy, for treating short- sightedness (myopia). Small incisions made in the cornea cause it to contract as it heals, bringing vision into focus. Fyodorov was also the first person to complete an artificial lens implantation in the Soviet Union. Patients were rotated from surgeon to surgeon in his conveyer-belt operating theatre, being treated in just over 15 minutes. Photographed in the Eye Microsurgery Institute, Moscow, in the then Soviet Union
