Sheep ked, light micrograph

Sheep ked. Polarised light micrograph of the head-end of the body of the parasitic wingless fly called the sheep ked (Melophagus ovinus). The sheep ked is an exo-parasite of sheep, goats and deer. This fly has adapted to its parasitic life by the loss of its wings. It also has a flattened body, piercing, sucking mouthparts, and hook-like claw structures on the ends of its legs for gripping onto skin. The sheep ked can weaken sheep and reduce the value of their skin. Sheep keds spread from sheep to sheep by physical contact. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across

A2 Poster (59.4 x 42cm, 23.4" x 16.5" inches) printed on 170gsm Satin Poster Paper. Securely packaged, rolled and inserted into a strong mailing tube and shipped tracked. Poster Prints are of comparable archival quality to our Photographic prints, they are simply printed on thinner Poster Paper. Whilst we only use Photographic Prints in our frames, you can frame Poster Prints if they are carefully supported to prevent sagging over time.

Poster prints are budget friendly enlarged prints in standard poster paper sizes (A0, A1, A2, A3 etc). Whilst poster paper is sometimes thinner and less durable than our other paper types, they are still ok for framing and should last many years. Our Archival Quality Photo Prints and Fine Art Paper Prints are printed on higher quality paper and the choice of which largely depends on your budget.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a sheep ked, a wingless fly that is a parasitic exo-parasite of sheep, goats, and deer. The image, captured using polarised light microscopy, reveals the head-end of this fascinating creature in stunning clarity. Adapted to its parasitic lifestyle, the sheep ked has evolved several unique features. Its wings have been lost over time as it no longer requires them for survival. Instead, it possesses a flattened body and piercing, sucking mouthparts to feed on its host's blood. The ends of its legs are equipped with hook-like claw structures that enable it to firmly grip onto the skin. Unfortunately, these parasites can weaken sheep and diminish the value of their skin. They spread from one animal to another through physical contact. This micrograph offers valuable insights into their anatomy and adaptations. With a magnification level of x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across, this image allows us to appreciate the complexity and beauty found within nature's smallest creatures. It serves as a reminder of the incredible diversity present in our world and highlights how even seemingly insignificant organisms play crucial roles in ecosystems. This remarkable photograph by Science Photo Library provides an opportunity for both scientific exploration and aesthetic appreciation within fields such as zoology, entomology, biology, and more.
