Poster Prints from Science Photo Library
Sergei Korolev, 1961
Sergei Korolev (1907-1966), pioneering Soviet rocket scientist, during the launch of Vostok 1, the first manned space mission, in April 1961. After developing an interest in rocketry, Korolev formed the Moscow Group for the Study of Reactive Motion who, in 1933, launched the USSRs first liquid-fueled rocket. During Stalins purges he was arrested but, his importance being recognised, he was allowed to continue researching. After the Second World War he was released and set to work developing rockets, both for space exploration and for military use. Vostok 1, although a great achievement on its own, was the first stage in his failed plan to land a cosmonaut on the Moon

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the brilliant mind and determined spirit of Sergei Korolev, a pioneering Soviet rocket scientist. Taken in 1961 during the historic launch of Vostok 1, the first manned space mission, this image immortalizes Korolev's instrumental role in shaping human exploration beyond Earth's boundaries. Born in 1907, Korolev developed an early fascination with rocketry and went on to establish the Moscow Group for the Study of Reactive Motion. In 1933, his team successfully launched the USSR's inaugural liquid-fueled rocket. However, his journey was not without obstacles as he faced arrest during Stalin's purges. Recognizing his invaluable contributions to science and technology, authorities allowed him to continue his research. Following World War II, Korolev was released and dedicated himself to developing rockets for both space exploration and military purposes. The monumental achievement depicted here is Vostok 1's orbital flight on April 12th, 1961 – a significant milestone that marked humanity's first venture into outer space. Although this triumph stands alone as an extraordinary feat of engineering and courage by Yuri Gagarin aboard Vostok 1, it also represents part of Korolev's ambitious yet unrealized dream: landing a cosmonaut on the Moon. Despite never seeing this vision come to fruition before his death in 1966 at age 59, Sergei Korolev remains forever etched in history as one of mankind’s greatest scientific minds who propelled us towards new frontiers among the stars.
