Second animals in space: Soviet space dogs

Space animals. Scientist holds up Strelka (left) and Belka, the dogs on board the Soviet Korabl- Sputnik 2 (also called Sputnik 5), the second spacecraft to carry animals into orbit. Launched on 19 August 1960, Strelka (meaning " Little Arrow" ) and Belka (meaning " Squirrel" ) were accompanied by 40 mice, 2 rats and some plants. The spacecraft orbited for one day, completing 18 revolutions around the Earth. It re-entered the atmosphere and the animals were recovered successfully. Strelka later gave birth to a litter of six healthy puppies, one of which was given to American president John F. Kennedy

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in space exploration history - the second animals to ever venture into space. Meet Strelka and Belka, two courageous Soviet space dogs who embarked on an extraordinary journey aboard the Korabl-Sputnik 2 spacecraft. Launched on August 19,1960, this pioneering mission aimed to study the effects of space travel on living organisms. Accompanied by 40 mice, 2 rats, and some plants, Strelka and Belka orbited Earth for one day, completing an impressive 18 revolutions around our planet. As they re-entered the atmosphere, scientists anxiously awaited their safe return. Miraculously, both dogs were successfully recovered from their daring voyage. The story doesn't end there though; it takes an unexpected turn towards heartwarming joy. Strelka later gave birth to six healthy puppies! In a remarkable gesture of goodwill between nations during the Cold War era, one of these adorable pups was gifted to American President John F. Kennedy. This image serves as a reminder of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and exploration beyond our earthly boundaries. It symbolizes the bravery and sacrifice made by these incredible animals in advancing our understanding of manned spaceflight. Thanks to Science Photo Library for preserving this iconic moment that forever etches Belka and Strelka into the annals of scientific achievement.
