Satellite re-entry

Satellite re-entry. Artwork of the re-entry of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) satellite through the Earths atmosphere. The CGRO was launched by NASA in 1991, carrying instruments which measured gamma radiation from high-energy sources such as supernovae, galaxies and pulsars. After nine years of research it was de-orbited in June 2000 through a controlled re-entry after the failure of one of its gyroscopes, which provide information on position and speed. Large portions of the 17, 000 kilogram satellite were vapourised as it passed through the atmosphere (as seen here). The remaining debris fragments landed safely in the Pacific ocean

A2 Poster (59.4 x 42cm, 23.4" x 16.5" inches) printed on 170gsm Satin Poster Paper. Securely packaged, rolled and inserted into a strong mailing tube and shipped tracked. Poster Prints are of comparable archival quality to our Photographic prints, they are simply printed on thinner Poster Paper. Whilst we only use Photographic Prints in our frames, you can frame Poster Prints if they are carefully supported to prevent sagging over time.

Poster prints are budget friendly enlarged prints in standard poster paper sizes (A0, A1, A2, A3 etc). Whilst poster paper is sometimes thinner and less durable than our other paper types, they are still ok for framing and should last many years. Our Archival Quality Photo Prints and Fine Art Paper Prints are printed on higher quality paper and the choice of which largely depends on your budget.

Estimated Image Size (if not cropped) is 42cm x 55.8cm (16.5" x 22")

Estimated Product Size is 42cm x 59.4cm (16.5" x 23.4")

These are individually made so all sizes are approximate

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the dramatic re-entry of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) satellite as it plunges through Earth's atmosphere. Launched by NASA in 1991, this scientific marvel was equipped with advanced instruments to measure gamma radiation emitted from celestial sources like supernovae, galaxies, and pulsars. However, after nine years of groundbreaking research, one of its gyroscopes failed, prompting a controlled de-orbiting in June 2000. As depicted in this illustration, the CGRO met its fiery fate during re-entry. We witness large portions of this colossal 17,000-kilogram satellite being vaporized upon contact with our planet's protective shield. The intense heat generated by atmospheric friction engulfs the spacecraft in flames that paint a mesmerizing spectacle against the dark backdrop of space. While most remnants were reduced to mere ashes during this tumultuous descent into Earth's embrace, some debris fragments managed to survive and safely landed in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. This image serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and exploration beyond our terrestrial boundaries. It symbolizes both triumph and sacrifice as scientists pushed boundaries while ensuring controlled disposal for public safety. Through their efforts aboard CGRO and other astronomical satellites like it, we continue unraveling mysteries hidden within cosmic phenomena that shape our understanding of astrophysics and ultimately enrich our lives on Earth.
