Pollen grains of Scots Pine tree

Pine pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) pollen grains. Each pollen grain consists of a base (coloured brown) with two air-filled, wing-like bladders (coloured green), which are extensions of the pollen grains wall. These wings help the wind- dispersed pollen to float on air. The pollen is produced by male pine cones high in the tree, and may have to reach female cones a great distance away. Wind-dispersed pollen is made in massive quantities. Magnification: x2010 at 10x8 inch size

A2 Poster (59.4 x 42cm, 23.4" x 16.5" inches) printed on 170gsm Satin Poster Paper. Securely packaged, rolled and inserted into a strong mailing tube and shipped tracked. Poster Prints are of comparable archival quality to our Photographic prints, they are simply printed on thinner Poster Paper. Whilst we only use Photographic Prints in our frames, you can frame Poster Prints if they are carefully supported to prevent sagging over time.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of pollen grains from a Scots Pine tree. In this coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), we are given a close-up view of the unique structure and design of these tiny particles. Each grain is composed of a brown base, which supports two remarkable wing-like bladders coloured in vibrant green. These wings serve an essential purpose in aiding wind dispersal, allowing the pollen to float effortlessly through the air. The production of such pollen is no small feat; male pine cones situated high up in the towering tree are responsible for its creation. To ensure successful pollination, these minuscule grains must travel great distances to reach female cones located elsewhere within their habitat. Nature's ingenuity shines through as we witness this incredible adaptation for reproduction in plants. The sheer quantity produced by wind-dispersed pollen is staggering, emphasizing its vital role in sustaining plant populations. Science Photo Library has captured this extraordinary image at an impressive magnification level of x2010, providing us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into the world of botany and reproductive processes. Whether you're fascinated by nature's intricate mechanisms or simply appreciate stunning visual artistry, this print will undoubtedly captivate your imagination and spark curiosity about our natural world.
