Orbison illusion

Orbison illusion. Both the rectangle surrounding the pattern and the perfect square within the pattern appear to be distorted. One of the most commonly accepted explanations of this is that the brain is responding to what it perceives as depth. The repeating lines give the image perspective and both the rectangle and the square are seen as existing within that. They are distorted accordingly, as the brain adjusts their real shape to approximate their shape were they actually in 3 dimensions

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Orbison illusion is a mind-bending visual trick that challenges our perception and understanding of depth. In this photo print, both the rectangular frame surrounding the intricate pattern and the perfect square within it appear to be distorted. This optical illusion has puzzled scientists and psychologists for years. The secret behind this perplexing phenomenon lies in how our brain interprets visual information. The repeating lines in the image create an illusion of perspective, leading our brain to perceive both the rectangle and square as existing within a three-dimensional space. As a result, their shapes are subtly altered to match what we would expect them to look like if they were truly three-dimensional objects. This fascinating interplay between trickery and vision highlights just how malleable our perception can be. The Orbison illusion demonstrates that even seemingly straightforward geometric shapes can become ambiguous when presented in certain contexts. As we delve into the realms of neuroscience and explore illusions like these, we gain valuable insights into how our brains process visual stimuli. Such studies not only deepen our understanding of human perception but also have practical applications in fields such as art, design, and advertising. This thought-provoking print from Science Photo Library serves as a reminder that appearances can indeed be deceiving - challenging us to question what we see before accepting it at face value.
