Miniature engine, SEM

Micro-engine. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of combustion chambers in the worlds smallest combustion engine. This is a rotary Wankel engine, which uses a rotating rotor instead of pistons and cylinders. Each chamber contains a fuel injection inlet and an exhaust outlet, and the cog at the centre allows the transmission of power. The entire engine is smaller than most batteries, and it is hoped that it could power a variety of electronic devices. It runs on liquid fuels such as butane or propane. It will lead the way to even smaller engines etched on a silicon wafer. The chip was built at the University of California at Berkeley, USA, in 2001

A2 (59.4 x 42cm) Poster Print

Discover the intricacies of engineering innovation with our Media Storehouse Poster Prints featuring the "Miniature engine, SEM" image from Science Photo Library. This captivating scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the intricate details of the combustion chambers in the world's smallest combustion engine. Each print is produced using high-quality materials, ensuring vibrant colors and sharp details. Bring this mesmerizing image into your workspace or home to inspire creativity and fuel your passion for science and engineering.

A2 Poster (59.4 x 42cm, 23.4" x 16.5" inches) printed on 170gsm Satin Poster Paper. Securely packaged, rolled and inserted into a strong mailing tube and shipped tracked. Poster Prints are of comparable archival quality to our Photographic prints, they are simply printed on thinner Poster Paper. Whilst we only use Photographic Prints in our frames, you can frame Poster Prints if they are carefully supported to prevent sagging over time.

Poster prints are budget friendly enlarged prints in standard poster paper sizes (A0, A1, A2, A3 etc). Whilst poster paper is sometimes thinner and less durable than our other paper types, they are still ok for framing and should last many years. Our Archival Quality Photo Prints and Fine Art Paper Prints are printed on higher quality paper and the choice of which largely depends on your budget.

Estimated Image Size (if not cropped) is 53cm x 42cm (20.9" x 16.5")

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable feat of engineering - a miniature engine that pushes the boundaries of size and innovation. Captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), this colored micrograph reveals the intricate combustion chambers within the world's smallest combustion engine. Unlike traditional engines, this rotary Wankel engine employs a rotating rotor instead of pistons and cylinders. Each chamber is equipped with both a fuel injection inlet and an exhaust outlet, while power transmission is facilitated by the cog positioned at its center. Astonishingly, this entire engine is smaller than most batteries, offering immense potential for powering various electronic devices. Running on liquid fuels such as butane or propane, this tiny marvel holds great promise for future advancements in nanotechnology. Constructed at the prestigious University of California in Berkeley back in 2001, it represents cutting-edge micromechanical ingenuity. While commercial applications are not explicitly mentioned here, one can only imagine the possibilities that lie ahead. This breakthrough paves the way for even smaller engines etched onto silicon wafers - an exciting prospect for technological progress. Science Photo Library has once again captured an awe-inspiring moment where science meets artistry. This image serves as a testament to human creativity and our relentless pursuit of pushing boundaries in mechanical engineering and microtechnology.
