Honey bee eye

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the compound eye of the honeybee, Apis mellifera. The eye is adorned with long bristles which largely obscure the hexagonal shape of the eyes many facets, or " ommatidia". Hairs on the bees body are associated with its role as a carrier of pollen, & they eye bristles can also perform this role. A single, tiny pollen grain is caught in the bristles on the edge of the eye in the top right corner of the picture. The base of one of the bees jointed antennae is at bottom right. Magnification: x25 at 35mm size, x180 at 8x10-inch size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 3.31, page 60

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a honey bee's compound eye, captured through a scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The mesmerizing image reveals the hexagonal shape of the eye's numerous facets, known as "ommatidia" which are partially obscured by long bristles adorning its surface. These bristles not only contribute to the aesthetic appeal but also serve an important purpose in the bee's life. As carriers of pollen, bees rely on their body hairs for effective transportation. Interestingly, even the bristles on their eyes can fulfill this role. In this particular photograph, one can observe a single tiny pollen grain caught within these delicate eye bristles at the top right corner of the picture. It serves as a testament to nature's remarkable design and efficiency. The photo also offers a glimpse into other fascinating details of the honey bee anatomy. At bottom right, we see part of one jointed antenna protruding into view—a crucial sensory organ that aids in navigation and communication within their complex social structure. With magnification levels reaching x25 at 35mm size and an impressive x180 at 8x10-inch size, this image allows us to appreciate both its artistic qualities and scientific significance. It is undoubtedly a stunning portrayal of nature's wonders—an ode to wild life and zoology enthusiasts alike who marvel at these incredible creatures known as Apis mellifera or honey bees.
