Healthy retina

Normal retina, ophthalmoscope image. The retina is the light-sensitive membrane that lines the back of the eye. Blood vessels (red) radiate out from the optic disc (yellow, left). The optic disc is the area where the optic nerve and blood vessels enter the eye. Due to this, it has no light- sensitive cells, and is the cause of the blind spot. The dark red area at centre is the macula. This is the region of the retina with the highest concentration of light-sensitive cells, and is responsible for the sharp vision at the centre of the visual field

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a healthy retina, the remarkable light-sensitive membrane that lines the back of our eyes. The intricate network of blood vessels gracefully radiates outwards from the optic disc, which is prominently displayed in a vibrant yellow hue on the left side of the image. It is at this precise location where both the optic nerve and blood vessels enter our precious eye. Interestingly, although essential for vision, this area lacks any light-sensitive cells and thus creates what we know as our blind spot. However, right at the center of attention lies an enchanting dark red region called the macula. This small but mighty part of our retina boasts an incredibly high concentration of light-sensitive cells and plays a pivotal role in providing us with sharp vision within our central visual field. The circular shape of this sightly photograph emphasizes not only its aesthetic appeal but also mirrors the rounded nature of our own retinas. With its detailed depiction capturing various anatomical elements such as nerves and blood vessels, it serves as a testament to the marvels found within our human bodies. This ophthalmoscope image offers a glimpse into one's visual sense while shedding light on crucial aspects related to ophthalmology and ocular health. Through this stunning portrayal by Science Photo Library, we are reminded once again how truly extraordinary and delicate our retinal structure is – an integral component responsible for enabling us to perceive and appreciate life's wonders through clear vision.
