The humour, which is continuously produced from blood capillaries, can no longer flow out of the eye through the Schlemms canals (small dark blue tubes in cross-section at upper & lower centre). The resulting rise in pressure crushes the blood vessels that supply the optic nerve fibres with blood, killing the fibres and slowly causing blindness. In a healthy eye, the aqueous humour fills the chamber between the cornea (pale blue arch, centre) and lens (pale blue oval, centre right), maintaining the eyes shape
