Evaluation of SAFER EVA backpack, STS-64

SAFER backpack test. Astronauts Carl Meade (left) and Mark Lee (right, on RMS arm) seen testing the Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue (SAFER) system during Shuttle Mission STS-64. In this test Meade was evaluating SAFERs automatic stabilising system after Lee span him round. SAFER is a scaled-down version of the Manned Manoeuvring Unit (MMU) used in Shuttle space walks, and is intended to provide emergency free-flying mobility or a self-rescue capability to astronauts during extravehicular activity (EVA). SAFER clips around the normal life-support backpack, and is powered by 24 fixed nitrogen thrusters. STS-64 flew on 9- 20 September 1994

A2 Poster (59.4 x 42cm, 23.4" x 16.5" inches) printed on 170gsm Satin Poster Paper. Securely packaged, rolled and inserted into a strong mailing tube and shipped tracked. Poster Prints are of comparable archival quality to our Photographic prints, they are simply printed on thinner Poster Paper. Whilst we only use Photographic Prints in our frames, you can frame Poster Prints if they are carefully supported to prevent sagging over time.

Poster prints are budget friendly enlarged prints in standard poster paper sizes (A0, A1, A2, A3 etc). EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a significant moment during the evaluation of the SAFER EVA backpack on Shuttle Mission STS-64. Astronauts Carl Meade and Mark Lee can be seen in action, testing the Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue (SAFER) system. In this particular test, Meade is assessing SAFER's automatic stabilizing system after being spun around by Lee. SAFER, a scaled-down version of the Manned Manoeuvring Unit (MMU), was designed to provide emergency free-flying mobility or self-rescue capability to astronauts during extravehicular activity (EVA). It securely clips around the normal life-support backpack and operates using 24 fixed nitrogen thrusters. This image showcases the dedication and precision required in manned spaceflight as Meade carefully evaluates SAFER's performance while floating weightlessly in space. The intense focus on their faces reflects their commitment to ensuring astronaut safety during EVAs. STS-64, which took place from September 9th to 20th, 1994, marked an important milestone in space exploration. The successful evaluation of SAFER demonstrated its potential as a crucial tool for astronauts conducting spacewalks outside the Space Shuttle. This photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in pushing boundaries beyond Earth's atmosphere. It reminds us of our relentless pursuit of knowledge and advancements that enable safer journeys into outer space.
