EDITORS COMMENTS
This 1889 engraving showcases the esteemed German surgeon, Ernst von Bergmann. Known for his groundbreaking contributions to aseptic surgery, von Bergmann revolutionized the field by introducing steam heat sterilization of surgical instruments. This innovative technique dramatically reduced rates of surgical infections caused by sepsis, marking a significant milestone in medical history. Von Bergmann's expertise was shaped by his experiences during the Russo-Turkish war (1877-1878), where he witnessed firsthand the perils of unsanitary conditions during surgeries. Motivated by this knowledge, he authored an influential work on cranial surgery titled "Die Chirurgische Behandlung der Hirnkrankheiten" in 1888 and wrote the first textbook on nervous system surgery back in 1870. In this black and white portrait, we see von Bergmann depicted with utmost dignity and professionalism against a plain white background. His piercing gaze reflects both intelligence and determination as he stands as a pioneer in his field. This historical illustration captures not only the essence of Ernst von Bergmann but also represents an era when medical breakthroughs were transforming healthcare practices. It serves as a reminder of how one individual's dedication can shape an entire discipline, leaving behind a lasting legacy that continues to benefit patients worldwide.
