A dead chinook salmon seen shortly after spawning

A dead chinook salmon seen shortly after spawning. Chinook salmons, Oncorhynchus tschawytscha, belong to the Pacific salmon genus and are found in rivers of North America and Asia. They spend the first two-three years of their lives in the rivers in which they were born. After this period they migrate towards the Pacific Ocean where they stay for about three years. They then start the spawning migration, thousands of kilometres long, which brings them back to the same river which saw the beginning of their lives. They are able to recognise the scents of their home waters thanks to their highly developed olfactory sense. Most of them die exhausted shortly after spawning. It is the Harrison River, British Columbia, Canada

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the poignant sight of a deceased chinook salmon, shortly after completing its remarkable journey of spawning. The chinook salmon, scientifically known as Oncorhynchus tschawytscha, is a majestic member of the Pacific salmon genus and can be found in rivers across North America and Asia. These resilient creatures spend their first few years in the very river where they were born before embarking on an arduous migration towards the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. After approximately three years at sea, driven by an innate instinct, they embark on an awe-inspiring journey back to their birthplace for spawning. Traversing thousands of kilometers against powerful currents, these magnificent fish rely on their highly developed olfactory sense to recognize the familiar scents of their home waters. However, this incredible feat takes a toll on their bodies, and most succumb to exhaustion shortly after fulfilling their reproductive duties. The photograph was taken along the Harrison River in British Columbia, Canada - a testament to nature's cyclical beauty and resilience. It serves as a reminder that life's journeys are often filled with challenges but also moments of profound significance. This image encapsulates both the fragility and strength inherent in our natural world while honoring one species' extraordinary life cycle.
