Copper mine

Copper mine. This is part of the Rio Tinto Mines in Huelva, Andalucia, Spain. This is an opencast mine that covers several square kilometres, with ores of copper, iron, silver and other metals all being mined here. The area was mined in Phoenician and Roman times several thousand years ago, but it was not intensively mined until after 1871 when it became an important worldwide source of copper. The richness of the earth's resources is evident here, with copper, iron, silver, and various other metals being extracted from these grounds. The historical significance of this site adds another layer of intrigue. Dating back thousands of years to Phoenician and Roman times when mining first began in this area; however, it was not until 1871 that its true potential was realized as a vital global source for copper.
