Close-up of a fossil crinoid or sea-lily
Fossil crinoid. Close-up of a fossilized crinoid from rocks of the Carboniferous period. The crinoids or sea lilies are primitive marine animals related to starfish and sea urchins. They are usually sessile, attaching themselves to rocks by a stem (broken off in this fossil). The stem is attached to a cup-like body or calyx (at right) which bears a crown of long, feathery arms. The animal used these arms for filtering particles of food from the sea. This crinoid is from rocks of the Carboniferous period, 280-345 million years ago. Only a few crinoid species have survived to the present day with some known to inhabit deep Antarctic waters. Magnification: x1 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable close-up of a fossil crinoid, also known as a sea-lily. Preserved in rocks from the Carboniferous period, which spanned an astonishing 280-345 million years ago, this ancient creature offers us a glimpse into the primitive marine life that once thrived on our planet. Crinoids are intriguing marine animals closely related to starfish and sea urchins. Typically sessile beings, they would attach themselves to rocks using their stem (unfortunately broken off in this particular fossil). The stem connects to a cup-like body or calyx on the right side of the image, adorned with an exquisite crown of long feathery arms. These delicate arms served as vital tools for filtering tiny particles of food from the surrounding seawater. While only a few crinoid species have managed to survive until today, some can still be found dwelling in the depths of Antarctic waters. The magnified view provided by this photograph allows us to appreciate every intricate detail preserved within this fossilized crinoid specimen. It serves as a testament to Earth's rich history and evolution over millions of years. This image is courtesy of Science Photo Library and provides valuable insights into paleontology and our understanding of prehistoric life forms.
