Beluga whales
Beluga whales (or white whales, Delphinapterus leucas). In summer, belugas migrate into river estuaries, where they moult. The yellowish colour of the males in this picture is typical of moulting adults. Belugas are normally a creamy white. Their skin is 100 times thicker than a human s, mainly for insulation. To encourage shedding of the old skin, they roll on the river bottom to rub against rocks and mud. Belugas inhabit the Arctic coastal waters of Europe, Asia and North America. During the summer season, these majestic creatures embark on a migratory journey into river estuaries where they undergo moulting. The males in this particular image exhibit a striking yellowish hue, which is characteristic of adult belugas during this phase. Ordinarily, belugas possess a creamy white complexion, and their skin is remarkably thick - approximately 100 times thicker than that of humans - primarily for insulation purposes. To facilitate the shedding process of their old skin, these intelligent mammals engage in an intriguing behavior: rolling on the river bottom to rub against rocks and mud.
