Astronauts underwater rehersal, HST repair mission
Rehearsal for the HST repair mission. Space-suited astronauts Kathy Thornton and Tom Akers seen during training for Shuttle Mission STS-61, the repair of the Hubble Space Telescope. To simulate working under zero gravity in orbit, the astronauts train inside a deep pool of water known as WET-F (Weightless Environment Training Facility). Here, the astronauts are practicing the removal of the telescopes Wide Field and Planetary Camera (WFPC), prior to inserting an updated version. At the bottom of the pool (out of frame) is a mock-up of the Shuttles cargo bay area. STS-61 is scheduled for flight in December 1993

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense training session of astronauts Kathy Thornton and Tom Akers as they rehearse for the historic Hubble Space Telescope (HST) repair mission. In preparation for Shuttle Mission STS-61, scheduled for flight in December 1993, these space-suited pioneers are seen submerged in a deep pool known as WET-F (Weightless Environment Training Facility). To simulate the weightlessness experienced in orbit, this underwater environment provides an ideal setting for honing their skills. Here, Thornton and Akers practice removing the Wide Field and Planetary Camera (WFPC) from the telescope before inserting an updated version. The meticulous attention to detail is evident as they navigate through the buoyancy tank with precision. At the bottom of this aquatic training ground lies a mock-up of the Shuttles cargo bay area, adding another layer of realism to their preparations. This image showcases NASA's commitment to ensuring every aspect of manned spaceflight is thoroughly tested and perfected before embarking on such critical missions. The significance of this rehearsal cannot be overstated; it represents a pivotal moment in human exploration beyond Earth's atmosphere. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph, we witness firsthand the dedication and expertise required by these brave individuals who push boundaries and expand our understanding of our universe. Captured by Science Photo Library, this image serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and its unwavering determination to conquer new frontiers in space exploration.
