Assortment of fossils from the Silurian period

Fossil corals. Assorted specimens of fossilized corals, now extinct, which lived in tropical seas during the Silurian period some 430 million years ago. Conical forms (upper centre, lower centre left) are from Hughley purple shales; tabulate " flattened" forms (at right and top) are from Wenlock limestone, sites both in England. Corals are colonial marine organisms that live in shallow seas. They secrete an external skeleton of calcium carbonate extracted from the water which, over time, build up into vast coral reefs. The site at which these fossils were found indicate that the British Isles were once much closer to the Equator

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an assortment of fossils from the Silurian period, offering a glimpse into the ancient world of marine life. The focal point of this image is a collection of fossilized corals, now extinct, that thrived in tropical seas approximately 430 million years ago. The upper center and lower center left display conical forms originating from Hughley purple shales, while the flattened tabulate forms at the right and top are derived from Wenlock limestone sites in England. Corals, as colonial marine organisms residing in shallow waters, played a crucial role in constructing vast coral reefs by secreting an external skeleton made of calcium carbonate extracted from water sources. These intricate structures gradually accumulated over time to form magnificent underwater ecosystems. The discovery site for these remarkable fossils provides valuable insights into Earth's geographical history. It suggests that what we know today as the British Isles once resided much closer to the Equator during the Silurian period. Through this mesmerizing print captured by Science Photo Library, viewers can appreciate both the beauty and scientific significance of these fossilized corals. They serve as tangible evidence of our planet's rich past and offer a window into an era when unique creatures thrived beneath ancient tropical seas.
