A car drives through the snow at night near Vostochnaya meteorological station
A car drives through the snow at night near Vostochnaya meteorological station, some 500 km northeast of Yakutsk in the Republic of Sakha, northeast Russia, January 20, 2013. The coldest temperatures in the northern hemisphere have been recorded in Sakha, the location of the the Oymyakon valley, where according to the United Kingdom Met Office a temperature of -67.8 degrees Celsius (-90 degrees Fahrenheit) was registered in 1933 - the coldest on record in the northern hemisphere since the beginning of the 20th century. Yet despite the harsh climate, people live in the valley, and the area is equipped with schools, a post office, a bank, and even an airport runway (albeit open only in the summer). EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, a car fearlessly navigates through the treacherous snow-covered terrain near Vostochnaya meteorological station in northeast Russia. The image captures the essence of resilience and determination amidst one of the harshest climates on Earth. Located in the Republic of Sakha, some 500 km northeast of Yakutsk, this region is notorious for recording the coldest temperatures in the northern hemisphere. In fact, it holds the record for registering a bone-chilling temperature of -67.8 degrees Celsius (-90 degrees Fahrenheit) back in 1933 – an extreme that remains unmatched since then. Despite these unforgiving conditions, life perseveres here as evidenced by human habitation within Oymyakon valley. This remote area boasts essential facilities such as schools, a post office, a bank, and even an airport runway (albeit operational only during summer). It serves as a testament to mankind's adaptability and resourcefulness when faced with nature's most formidable challenges. The photograph showcases both the beauty and harshness of this frozen landscape. The car's headlights pierce through darkness while illuminating swirling snowflakes around it – creating an ethereal atmosphere that evokes awe and wonder. It reminds us that even in seemingly inhospitable environments like this one, humanity finds ways to thrive against all odds. Maxim Shemetov skillfully captured this moment on January 20th, 2013 – immortalizing not just a scene but also symbolizing our indomitable spirit when confronted with nature's icy embrace.
