EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the winter of 1925, when the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) sought to entice travelers to Southport, Merseyside for a delightful holiday. The poster, skillfully illustrated by Fortunino Matania, showcases a bustling scene outside the Garrick Theatre on Lord Street. The artwork transports us into an era of elegance and sophistication. Fashionably dressed women and men can be seen strolling along the streets in their finest attire. Their coats and hats protect them from the crisp winter air as they eagerly make their way towards the theater. The vibrant colors used in this painting bring life to every detail - from the intricate designs on their dresses to the shine of polished motorcars parked nearby. Matania's talent shines through in his ability to capture not only fashion but also movement and atmosphere. It is no wonder that King George V himself was impressed with Matania's work and invited him to document his tour of India. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of history, we are reminded of a time when travel posters were not just advertisements but works of art themselves. They transported viewers into dreamlike destinations where holidays promised excitement and joy. This print serves as a window into both Southport's past allure as a winter getaway destination and Matania's incredible artistic prowess.
