EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1925, when the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) commissioned this stunning poster showcasing Shap Fell in Cumbria. The image captures the majestic beauty of the hills that adorn this picturesque region along the LMS main line to and from Scotland. Renowned artist Donald Maxwell, who studied at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art, masterfully brought this scene to life. His expertise as an official artist for the Admiralty during World War I shines through in his attention to detail and ability to capture nature's grandeur. Maxwell's talent was not limited to landscapes; he also had the privilege of accompanying Prince Charles on his tour of India and illustrating "The Prince of Wales's Eastern Book". Printed by Cs Allen & Co Ltd in London, this poster serves as a testament to both artistic excellence and historical significance. It is a visual reminder of a bygone era when rail travel was not only practical but also celebrated for its scenic routes.
