John McEnroe was two flashpoints away from being thrown out of Wimbledon.
The number two seed, received one public waring and was then docked 2 penalty points as he beat Tom Gullikson 7-6, 7-5. 6-3 in a bad tempered confrontation on Court One.
McEnroes warning came after he angrily smashed a racket, stamping on the strings and yanking off the handle.
Then he was fined the two penalty points for calling umpire Edward James " the pits of the world", and " an incompetent fool"

John McEnroe's Fiery Clash at Wimbledon - A Moment Frozen in Time

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print captured by Mike Maloney and Monte Fresco, we are transported back to the intense first-round match between John McEnroe and Tom Gullikson on Court Number One at Wimbledon. It was Monday, 22nd June 1981, a day that would forever be etched in tennis history. McEnroe, known for his explosive temper and unparalleled talent, found himself teetering on the edge of disqualification. The number two seed pushed the boundaries as he clashed with both his opponent and the umpire throughout the match.
