His home blitzed but he still hits out and opens the cricket season 1944

His home blitzed but he still hits out and opens the cricket season 1944. John Hudd aged 7 is star batsman on the cricket pitch at the blitzed site in Clarkson St Canning Town. His little brother Freddie aged 4 is pretty good at wicket too. The pitch is not too good rather to much in the way of bricks and mortar for no wonder Johnny and Freddies home used to stand more or less on the spot. It was just an ordinary little home somewhat similar in design to those pathetic skeletons in the background when in 1941 Jerry pressed the button and blasted it to the ground.
Our Picture Shows Billie Hudd aged 6 as wicket keeper cheering as the batsman John Hudd is clean bowled brother Freddie can be seen fielding in the background

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1944, titled "His home blitzed but he still hits out and opens the cricket season" we witness the indomitable spirit of young John Hudd, a star batsman at just seven years old. Despite his home being reduced to rubble in the devastating bombings during World War II, John fearlessly takes to the cricket pitch located on what used to be his family's humble abode in Clarkson St Canning Town. The backdrop of shattered buildings serves as a poignant reminder of the destruction caused by Jerry's relentless button-pressing in 1941. Amongst these skeletal remains stands little Freddie, only four years old but already displaying promising skills as a wicket keeper. The makeshift pitch is far from ideal, with bricks and mortar scattered haphazardly around it. Amidst this scene of resilience and determination, we catch a glimpse of Billie Hudd, aged six, enthusiastically cheering on her brother behind the wickets. As fate would have it, John faces an unfortunate dismissal - clean bowled! Nevertheless, his unwavering passion for cricket shines through. This photograph captures not only the innocence and joy of childhood play but also symbolizes how even amidst chaos and destruction brought about by war, life goes on. It reminds us that laughter can still be found amidst ruins and that sports can provide solace during trying times. George Greenwell skillfully immortalizes this moment in history through his lens for all generations to cherish on Memory Lane
