EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in January 1909 in Tampa, Florida, captures a group of young cigarmakers at Englahardt & Co. The boys in the image appear to be under the age of 14, and at the time, labor reported that work was slack and few youngsters were being employed. However, during busier periods, many small children, both boys and girls, were put to work in the cigar factories. The young cigarmakers are shown taking a break, with cigarettes in hand, reflecting the normality of smoking in the workplace for children during this era. The witness to this scene was Sara R. Hine, who documented the working conditions of children in the United States for the National Child Labor Committee. This poignant image provides a glimpse into the lives of young workers in Tampa's cigar industry over a century ago.
