EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst the chaos and hardships of the First World War, a slightly daft-looking young soldier named Fred finds himself in an unusual predicament. As he marched through the trenches of France in 1915, Fred had amassed a collection of souvenir buttons from various places and people he had encountered during his service. These buttons served as reminders of the experiences he had and the people he had met. However, Fred's kindness and generosity soon got the better of him. As the weeks went by, Fred found himself giving away his precious buttons to family members back home, as well as to the many women who had shown him kindness and support during his leave. Before he knew it, Fred was left with nothing but a threadbare uniform and a large safety pin. The other soldiers in Fred's unit couldn't help but chuckle at their comrade's foolishness. "What's the matter, Fred?" they'd ask, teasingly. "Lost all your buttons, have you?" But Fred didn't mind the ribbing. He knew that the memories and connections he had made were worth more than any souvenir button. This cartoonish image captures the spirit of Fred's predicament, with the young soldier looking slightly daft as he struggles to fasten his uniform with a large safety pin. The First World War was a time of great sacrifice and hardship, but it was also a time of human connection and kindness. Fred's story serves as a reminder of the importance of these connections, even in the midst of war.
