EDITORS COMMENTS
Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Women's Relief Corps in Leavenworth, Kansas: A Tribute to Compassion and Service This exquisitely gilded and embossed postcard showcases the Women's Relief Corps, a charitable society dedicated to providing local relief work among the needy and aiding military veterans. Established in 1869, the first Women's Corps was formed in Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1883, by the indomitable spirit of Mrs. Emily Jenkins and eleven other women. The Women's Relief Corps, adorned in their distinctive uniforms, are depicted on this postcard, proudly wearing their caps adorned with stars and stripes, and holding a banner emblazoned with the Corps' insignia - a red cross on a white background. The ladies' sashes are adorned with the stars of the United States and the name of their respective states. The Women's Relief Corps was a significant part of American social history, as it was one of the earliest women's organizations to offer medical aid and assistance to soldiers and civilians during times of need. The Corps' humanitarian efforts were recognized with the award of a medal from the United States Congress, which was proudly displayed on their uniforms. This postcard, dated 1911, commemorates the 25th anniversary of the foundation of this branch of the Corps in Leavenworth, Kansas. The Women's Relief Corps continued to serve their communities and support veterans for over a century, embodying the spirit of compassion, unity, and service that defines the very essence of America.
