The year is around 1000 BCE, and Saul, feeling the weight of imminent battle against the Philistines, seeks guidance from the deceased prophet. Desperate and fearful, he turns to the occult, a practice condemned by God. The witch, known as Rosa in this depiction, is shown in a dimly lit room, her face illuminated by the flickering light of the fire before her. She holds a bowl or cauldron, into which she has poured various herbs and other mysterious ingredients. Her hands are raised in a gesture of invocation, while her eyes are closed in concentration.
