EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two exotic birds, the White-backed Mousebird (Colius colius) and the Pine Grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator), from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was expertly executed by Madame Rebel, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The White-backed Mousebird is native to sub-Saharan Africa and is characterized by its white back, black wings, and long, decurved beak. This bird is omnivorous and is known to feed on fruits, seeds, and insects. The Pine Grosbeak, on the other hand, is a large songbird native to North America, with a distinctive red face, yellow underparts, and black and white wings. This bird primarily feeds on seeds, fruits, and insects. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this engraving showcase the exceptional artistry of the time. The White-backed Mousebird and Pine Grosbeak are depicted in their natural habitats, with the Mousebird perched on a branch and the Grosbeak amongst pine cones. This beautiful work of art provides a glimpse into the natural world of the past and showcases the exquisite talent of the artists and craftsmen involved in its creation.
