EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Polhill-Turner family, comprised of Victorian matriarch Mrs. Emily Frances Barron Polhill-Turner (nee Barron, deceased 1913), her husband Frederick Charles Polhill-Turner (1826-1881), and their three children: Alice Kate Frances Polhill-Turner (b. 1856), Arthur Twistleton Polhill-Turner (b. 1862), and Emily Beatrice Violet Polhill-Turner (deceased 1930). The family resided at Howbury Hall in Renhold, Bedfordshire. The Polhill-Turners were part of the aristocratic gentry class of the late Victorian era. Their eldest son, Arthur, and his brother Cecil Henry Polhill-Turner (b. 1860), are notable for their involvement in the so-called Cambridge Seven in the 1880s. This group of seven young men from the University of Cambridge dedicated themselves to Christian evangelism and spent many years in China as missionaries. Arthur's commitment to spreading the gospel in China was a testament to the family's strong Christian faith and their desire to make a positive impact on the world. The Polhill-Turners' story is a fascinating blend of Victorian-era class, history, and personal values, reflecting the complexities and nuances of the period. Mrs. Polhill-Turner, dressed elegantly in Victorian attire, gazes lovingly at her children, who are dressed in fashionable yet practical clothing for the era. The photograph captures a moment of warmth and connection within the family, providing a glimpse into the lives of the Polhill-Turners and their unique place in history.
