EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the historic moment when Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama met with the King of Calicut, or Zamorin, in May 1498 during his groundbreaking voyage around the Cape of Good Hope. The King of Calicut, also known as the Samudiri or Samorim of Kozhikode, extended traditional Indian hospitality to the weary explorer and his crew. The grand procession of at least 3,000 armed Nairs, the feudal warriors of the Zamorin, welcomed Vasco da Gama with great fanfare. However, the much-anticipated trade discussions between the two parties did not yield the desired results. Vasco da Gama, who had embarked on his voyage from Portugal in July 1497, became the first European to reach India by sea, opening up a new trade route between Europe and the East. His arrival marked the beginning of the Portuguese colonial era in India and paved the way for extensive European involvement in the subcontinent's affairs. Despite the lack of concrete trade agreements during this initial meeting, the encounter between Vasco da Gama and the Zamorin set the stage for future interactions between Europeans and Indians. The image stands as a testament to the rich cultural exchange that took place during the 15th century and continues to shape the complex relationship between the two continents to this day.
