The house in the foreground once belonged to the intrepid Austrian explorer, Hermann von Lenz. Lenz, an engineer and geographer, arrived in Timbuktu in 1880 and was captivated by the city's rich history and unique architecture. Timbuktu, also known as Tombouctou or Timbuctoo, is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the West African nation of Mali.
