EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored lithograph depicts two exquisite specimens of stony coral fossils, Lithodendron plicatum and Anthophyllum compressum, from Dr. F.A. Schmidt's Petrefactenbuch, published in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1855 by Verlag von Krais & Hoffmann. Dr. Schmidt's Book of Petrification was a groundbreaking work that introduced fossils and palaeontology to both specialist and general readers, making it an essential contribution to the scientific community of the time. The Lithodendron plicatum, also known as the "pleated stony coral," is depicted on the left side of the image. Its intricate, wavy branches are covered in tiny, hexagonal plates, giving it a unique and textured appearance. This fossil coral species is characterized by its complex branching pattern and the presence of small, raised nodules on its surface. On the right side of the lithograph, the Anthophyllum compressum, or "pressed flower coral," is shown. This fossil coral is distinguished by its flattened, fan-like shape and the presence of small, rounded nodules along its branches. The Anthophyllum compressum is a member of the Anthophyllum genus, which is known for its distinctive, flower-like branching structure. These stony coral fossils, Lithodendron plicatum and Anthophyllum compressum, provide a fascinating glimpse into the ancient world of marine life that once inhabited our planet. The intricate details of their structures are beautifully captured in this handcolored lithograph, making it a valuable historical record of the natural world and a testament to the beauty and complexity of the fossil record.
