This powerful image captures the beginning of the Rennes Trial, the second court martial of Alfred Dreyfus in 1899. The Dreyfus Affair, a major political and social crisis in late 19th-century France, centered around the wrongful conviction of Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French army, on charges of treason. The first trial and conviction in 1894 were widely criticized due to the flimsy evidence against Dreyfus and the blatant anti-Semitic bias of the military tribunal.
