Sir Alexander Cockburn (1802-1880): A Distinguished Scottish Politician and Judge This beautifully colored engraving depicts Sir Alexander Cockburn, a prominent Scottish figure of the 1800s. Born in 1802, Sir Alexander Cockburn rose to prominence as a lawyer, politician, and judge in Britain. He was created a Baronet in 1856 and served as the Chief Justice of the Queen's Bench from 1858 until his retirement in 1880. The image, produced by Paris and published in The Spanish and American Illustration in 1872, captures Sir Alexander Cockburn in his prime. He is depicted wearing a formal attire, including a bow tie and a barrister's wig, signifying his status as a respected QC (Queen's Counsel) and a leading counsel in the courts of England and Wales. His bald head, a common trait of men of his age during that time, is also visible in the portrait.
