A Sextant, 1912: Navigating the High Seas with Precision This illustration showcases a typical sextant from the year 1912, an essential tool for mariners and explorers during the age of sail and early steamships. Sextants were indispensable for determining a ship's position at sea, allowing navigators to calculate their latitude by measuring the angle between the sun, the horizon, and their current location. The intricate design of the sextant is illustrated here, with the sun represented by a small circle at the top of the instrument. The horizon is depicted as a flat line at the bottom, while the user's perspective is represented by the curved sighting tube in the center.
