This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Sir Samuel White Baker (1821-1893), the renowned English explorer, in the later years of his life. Baker is best known for his expeditions in East Africa, where he discovered the sources of the Nile's Bahr el Ghazal and Albert Nile tributaries in the late 1850s. His achievements earned him the moniker "The Lake Albert Discoverer." The image, taken in 1893, reveals Baker in his prime, with a thick white beard that had grown over several decades of adventure and exploration.
