EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the Illustrated London News' special panorama supplement, Great War Deeds, produced in 1915, we witness a moment of unyielding bravery and determination from three unsung heroes of the Royal Field Artillery during the early days of the First World War. Captain Douglas Reynolds, Driver J.H.C. Drain, and Driver F. Luke are depicted in the midst of a harrowing situation at Le Cateau, as they valiantly attempt to save their gun from the relentless barrage of hostile fire from the Germans. The painting, by the renowned artist Begg, captures the raw emotion and intensity of the battlefield, with the trio's focus and determination shining through amidst the chaos and destruction. The scene unfolds as the gallant Captain Reynolds rides horseback, leading his men, Drain and Luke, as they make a daring attempt to wheel their gun away from the enemy's line of fire. The two drivers, working in unison, expertly maneuver the heavy cart and gun, with Drain deftly guiding the horses while Luke keeps the gun in check. Despite the hail of bullets whizzing past them, they remain steadfast in their mission, their unwavering courage and quick thinking ultimately saving the gun and the lives of their comrades. For their heroic actions, Captain Reynolds, Driver Drain, and Driver Luke were each awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration for valour in the face of the enemy. This powerful image serves as a testament to the extraordinary bravery and selflessness displayed by these ordinary men during the Great War.
