EDITORS COMMENTS
Seven Sopwith 2F1 Camel aircraft line the deck of HMS Furious in this evocative photograph taken prior to the daring raid on the Tondern airship sheds on 19th July 1918. The British naval force, led by HMS Furious, embarked on this mission with the objective of destroying the Zeppelin sheds and the German airships housed within. The Sopwith 2F1 Camel, a versatile biplane, was the primary aircraft used by the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) for scouting and attacking enemy targets from the sea. In this photograph, the Camels are arranged in a meticulously ordered line, their wings glistening in the sunlight, and their engines ready for action. The raid on Tondern, located in the North Sea, resulted in the destruction of two German Zeppelins, L54 and L60, which were housed in one shed. However, the mission came at a cost, as only two of the Camels managed to return to the naval force. The successful attack on the sheds significantly weakened the German airship fleet and was a significant victory for the Allied forces. The photograph captures the sense of anticipation and determination among the crew of HMS Furious as they prepare for the raid. The Sopwith Camels, with their distinctive silhouette, stand ready to carry out their role in this pivotal moment of the First World War.
