EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative set of images from the Illustrated London News transports us back to the tragic maritime event of 1909, when two White Star Line vessels, RMS Republic and SS Florida, collided off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The photographs capture the aftermath of the collision, with the sinking Republic and the damaged bow of the Florida. Among the most significant aspects of this disaster was the role of wireless telegraphy in saving lives. The RMS Republic was the first ship to be equipped with the new Marconi wireless telegraph system, and Jack Binns, the wireless-telegraph operator, became a hero as he transmitted the distress signal "CQD" (Come Quickly, Danger) for an unprecedented fourteen hours straight from the wreckage of the wireless office. The third image in this series provides a glimpse into the wireless-telegraphy room on the Republic, where Binns worked tirelessly to send out the distress call. The room, filled with the latest technology of the time, was a testament to the advancements in communication and the vital role it played in maritime safety. These images serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of innovation and quick thinking in the face of disaster. The RMS Republic's tragic sinking marked a turning point in maritime history, as wireless telegraphy proved its worth in saving lives and improving communication at sea.
