The Queen of Ashantis bed, 1874

A British soldier enters the empty bedchamber of the Queen of Ashanti which has a bed on the floor and is nowhere near as grand an affair as the Kings bedchamber. In 1873, after decades of an uneasy relationship between the British and the Acing people of central Ghana, the British attacked and virtually destroyed the Asanti capital of Kumasi, and officially declared Ghana a crown colony on 24 July 1874

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a poignant moment in history as a British soldier enters the empty bedchamber of the Queen of Ashanti in 1874. The stark contrast between the Queen's humble bed on the floor and the grandeur of the King's bedchamber speaks volumes about the unequal relationship between the British colonizers and the Acing people of central Ghana. In 1873, tensions reached a breaking point when British forces attacked and virtually destroyed the Asanti capital of Kumasi. This marked a turning point as Ghana was officially declared a crown colony on July 24, 1874. The image serves as a reminder of the devastating impact colonialism had on indigenous cultures and their way of life. The historical significance of this photograph cannot be understated, highlighting not only the power dynamics at play during this period but also shedding light on how entire civilizations were upended by imperialist ambitions. It is a somber reflection on our shared past and serves as an important reminder to learn from these dark chapters in history to ensure they are never repeated.
